Contrast Sensitivity Training
Three Gabor patches appear below — all with the same orientation. Find the one with a different contrast level. As your brain sharpens, the difference becomes subtler.

Contrast sensitivity is key to reading
The Visionary app tracks your contrast threshold over time and adapts your 21-day training protocol accordingly.
Why Contrast Sensitivity Matters
The Foundation of Vision
Contrast sensitivity is your brain's ability to distinguish an object from its background. It's even more important than visual acuity (the "20/20" number) for real-world tasks like reading in dim light or driving at dusk.
How Presbyopia Affects Contrast
As your lens hardens with age (presbyopia), it scatters light more, reducing the contrast of images reaching your retina. Your brain must work harder to interpret these lower-contrast signals — causing "visual fatigue" and brain fog.
Proven Improvement
The landmark UC Berkeley study (Polat et al., 2012) showed that Gabor contrast training improved participants' contrast sensitivity by an average of 1.6 log units — a massive improvement that translated to real-world reading ability.
Neural Amplification
Training at contrast threshold forces your visual cortex neurons to amplify faint signals. Over time, these neurons become more efficient "amplifiers" — effectively letting you see through the blur caused by aging optics.
